Skadarlija Street

Skadarlija Street, the old bohemian quarter of Belgrade dates back to late 19th and early 20th century. It was back then when its taverns and cafés   were a meeting place for many of the greatest figures of the public life of the period. It is often compared with the Montmartre in Paris, both for its appearance and the cheerful, vigorous bohemian atmosphere.

This part of town took shape in the first half of 19th century and Skadarska Street has been traced to 1872  when each house has been given its number. Back then, many writers, actors, painters and journalists lived in Skadarlija. Today, as a tourist attraction, Skadarlija offers a variety of well known restaurants like "Tri šešira", "Ima dana", "Dva jelena", "Skadarlija", "Zlatni bokal" and "Dva bela goluba", as well as galleries, antiques and souvenirs shops.

The restaurants in Skadarlija traditionally promote the national cuisine, but their offer includes international dishes as well. Nearly all restaurants also have live music with a traditional repertoire.

Vuk Restaurant

Restaurant Vuk named after Vuk Karadzic - Serbian language reformer is located in the hearth of the city - just next to Knez Mihajlova - the major pedestrian street in Belgrade. The restaurant has thirty years of tradition in providing excellent service accompanied with high quality traditional cooking and ethnographic atmosphere. Almost all traditional meals are present at the restaurant menu and we have tried below to capture the widest possible list of meals offered. The restaurant prides itself on very wide choice on their wine list - ranging from domestic Serbian wines such as Smederevka and Plemenka all the way to various imported wines. If you want to try some of the deserts the restaurant offers really wide choice and some of the popular deserts include: Serbian Walnut Pie, Sour Cherry or Apple Pie, Chocolate Cake, Hazelnut Cake, Pancakes With Walnuts And Jam, Tiramisu, Date and many others. Our tip for this restaurant is to go for Gibanica (special type of Serbian traditional cheese pie).  Address: Vuka Karadzica 12, 11000 Belgrade, Serbia Location: Center  Telephone: (+381 11) 2629 761

"?" the oldest restaurant in Belgrade

The oldest Belgrade restaurant, built in 1823 as a property of Knez Miloš Obrenović, given as a gift to Naum Lčko, his commercial consul. It was constructed by the Greek builders in the Balkan style. As soon as 1826, on the ground floor of this building, Ečim-Toma Kostić, opened a cafe called "Ečim-Tomina". Since 1878, when it was sold by the successors, it has changed its owners and names. First it was called "Kod pastira" (At Shepherd's) in 1878, then, in 1892 "Kod Saborne crkve" (At the Cathedral Church), but this was soon removed. As a temporary solution, the owner has put up just a question mark, which has remained until today. Vuk Karadžić used to come to this restaurant in 1830-1831.  Address: Kralja Petra I no.6

Opera Restaurant

Opera is located just off Republic Square and right next to the Majestic hotel. The service is outstanding, while the international cuisine served often comes with an original twist and makes for a memorable experience. Vegetarians will also have a wide choice here, and we particularly recommend the salads, pastas and risottos. The wine selection is good, and the desserts are delicious and typically Italian. The place can be crowded at lunchtime or in the after-work hours, but it is worth giving it a try without reservations. This restaurant also serves as one of Belgrade Cafes especially during the summer when their beautiful garden is opened.  Address: Obilicev Venac 30, 11000 Belgrade, Serbia Location: Center Telephone: (+381 11) 3036 200
